Ice Cream at Kapiti, paragliders, transformer bus stop, long beach, the ferry, old fig tree, playground at the holiday park, oldest petrol station, Maori mask, long beach
Starting Point: Russell
Ending Point: Russell
Today was a slower day. We are staying in Russell for 2 nights in order to give ourselves time to see a few things so there was no reason to rush and hit the road.
This morning we got up and took the passenger ferry across the bay from Russell to Pahia. It’s about a 12 minute ride and we watched all the sailboats and paragliders as we crossed the bay.
Once there we wandered along the coast up to Waitanga, spending some time at Horotutu and Te Ti beaches and then stopping off at Vinny’s Takeaway for some fish and chips, cooked up fresh to order. Super light and yummy!
After lunch, we took the ferry back to Russell and wandered over to Long Beach and Waitata Bay, which are just over the ridge from Russell. Did a bit of wandering on the beaches and walking on the rocks since the tide was out.
Then we headed back into town for a bit of ice cream at Kapiti – flavor of choice: dark chocolate chili and raspberry – and looked at some of the historic buildings in town…the oldest operating petrol station in New Zealand, the old police station, and the oldest licensed hotel, and a huge old fig tree that was planted in the 1800s. Tomorrow we’ll visit the oldest church and a place with an old printing press.
By then we were exhausted from walking all day, so we headed back to the Spaceship to watch a movie and edit photos, stopping to take our picture at the old transformer bus stop along the way.
Tomorrow we will continue North up the coast to Whatuwhiwhi, which will put us in good position to head up to Cape Reinga on Tuesday. Cape Reinga is the northernmost point of New Zealand and the place where the Pacific ocean meets the Tasman Sea.
Hope everyone is having a good weekend.
