2 years ago, we got on a plane in ABQ and flew to Dallas on our way to Ecuador, kicking off what we hoped would be 18 months to 2 years of travel. Since then, we have visited 20 countries on 6 different continents on this crazy adventure. We’ve slept in swags, tents, hostels, hotels, guesthouses, apartments, the guestrooms of friends, and even a campervan for 2 months. Along the way, we’ve learned to speak Spanish and to say the more important survival phrases in at least 7 other languages. This year, our life of travel started to evolve into more of an expat lifestyle. And it’s one that suits us, even though it is also one of the most challenging things we’ve ever done.
Today, we woke up in Bangkok, one of our favorite places and a homebase for us. After months of political unrest and protests, martial law was declared here just a few days ago, and, this afternoon, the military declared a full coup d’etat. It’s an interesting time to be here. This is the 19th coup or attempted coup in Thailand in the past 80 or so years, so it’s not something that really phases the Thai people. Life continues to go on here as normal. If you didn’t watch the news or pay attention to social media you wouldn’t even know anything was going on. Our neighborhood is business as usual. But it is interesting to share a small part in history. We will be here until the end of May.
It’s the kind of crazy thing that you always hear about happening to someone else. But this time, here we are. Just the most recent crazy happening in this amazing life we’ve managed to carve out for ourselves. If you’d told us 2 years ago where we would be today, and where we are planning to go in the future, we probably wouldn’t have believed you. But we are so grateful for where we are, for what we get to do with this crazy life of ours, and for the privilege of getting to do it together.
Over the next week or so (depending on how good our internet remains) we’ll also be recapping some of our favorite memories from the past year as well as sharing some of our travel tips and favorite resources. And of course there are always lots of photos. Up above is a slideshow of some of our favorite snapshots from this past year, in totally random order.
Thanks so much for coming with us on this journey and for always being our biggest cheerleaders!
The journey continues! With big plans for South America coming up in June!
Cheers!
