{Beautiful Noche Buenas (poinsettias) in locally made clay pots line the Alcala, the pedestrian street here in Oaxaca.}
The holiday season here is ramping up, with Christmas decorations & displays popping up all over town, even though we’re still getting high temperatures into the 70’s and 80’s during the day. Right now, we’re getting the best of both worlds. Beautiful weather and lots of fresh produce in the markets, and all the beautiful holiday traditions and decorations for Christmas too.
The Posadas begin tomorrow. Marking the 9 days leading to Christmas, they are a tradition of daily masses and fiestas to commemorate Mary and Joseph’s search for lodging before they found the manger. It’s a very festive time, and the streets will be filled with parades of people singing & dancing in candlelit processions as they make their way through the streets to their fiestas, finally asking to be let inside so the party can begin.

{The city has put up all sorts of displays of holiday traditions. This is of a piñata shop. The traditional Christmas Piñata is seen here. It’s star shaped and has seven points, which represent the 7 deadly sins. These sins are broken by the stick, which symbolizes strength of and faith in God.}

{Beautiful tiny criollo tomatoes from the local market. These were destined to become salsa, but we also made a caprese salad with these, the local Quesillo cheese, and fresh basil.}

{The Gigantes have to make it to their parades and fiestas somehow. Always funny to see them in the back of trucks.}

{Homemade pizza – Zucchini, garlic, and orange bell peppers on a bed of Quesillo and Queso Fresco cheese. All from our Saturday market trip.}
