We’re getting ready for a short trip back to the states next week. So this week was all about getting some work done, but also appreciating & exploring this place a little bit more before we say “hasta luego.”

{Desayuno at Mercado de la Merced this week. The Merced market is about a ten minute walk from our house. This is a breakfast of chocolate de agua – a rich chocolate, whipped with spices and hot water until frothy – and memelas – corn tortillas with pork lard, black beans, and then extra toppings. One is topped with huitlacoche, a fungus that grows on corn and is a delicacy here. It tastes a lot like mushrooms. The other has chicken tinga (chicken in a spicy tomato sauce) and mushrooms. Both are cooked up on a comal over hot coals and then topped with the local cheese, Quesillo.}

{Some friends of ours had a donkey living next door to their house in the valley. They named him Harold. Found this little tin magnet in the market this week and it totally reminds us of him. Makes me smile whenever I walk past the refrigerator.}

{Glass of strawberry pulque in one of our favorite little Mezcal bars. Pulque is made from the fermented sap of the Agave plant. It’s one of the oldest spirits here in Mesoamerica and its origins go back well over 1,000 years. It’s a fermented beverage, so it doesn’t keep long, and comes in a natural flavor or with fruit added. Our favorites are pineapple and strawberry. It’s also dangerous because it just tastes like you’re drinking a carbonated juice, and then the alcohol hits you.}

{Beautiful blooming tree in the neighborhood. No idea what kind, but it drops these soft pink flowers. They smell nice too!}
